Blood Borne Diseases in Dogs

Dogs that live in heavily wooded areas or frequent the outdoors are at risk for blood borne diseases that are transmitted by ticks. Ticks get blood borne disease when they bite infected deer, and then bite your dog, transferring the disease. Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Fever, and Ehrlichia are all blood borne diseases transmitted by ticks. There are a wide range of symptoms including fever, lethargy, vomiting, and seizures, although sometimes there are no symptoms at all. Although there is treatment for these diseases, early detection is important. Treatment can be costly and if undiagnosed these diseases can be fatal.

It is important to keep your dog protected against ticks. Dogs that are outdoors
often are at higher risk for getting ticks.

At The Cat & Dog Clinic we recommend Vectra, applied every 30 days to prevent ticks.
